Quarter

The Manufactory Quarter, the former Baltic Cotton Factory or Sitsi factory, is undergoing significant changes, becoming a complete living and business environment that combines historical heritage with modern lifestyle.

By respecting and reviving the factory’s past, we create a progressive quarter – a living and breathing community where, in addition to greenery, even its own kindergarten enriches life. The development of the quarter is also supported by a new traffic axis, a sidewalk connecting Kopli and Sõle streets, which unites different parts of the area into a single whole.

Parks and greenery

To make the residents and the visitors of the quarter, as well as the citizens of the city feel welcome in the Factory’s premises, the diverse greenery and landscape has been created taking into account the needs and wishes of both locals and guests. The park area and square in front of the Factory and the green landscape area between the M7 buildings create a pleasant environment for walking and resting.

Historic apple orchard

“…when the apple trees bloom…” At one time, there was a beautiful arboretum and apple orchards next to the factory to the delight of the workers. The spring sea of blossoms and autumn fruit harvest are coming back, as the historic apple orchard is due for restoration.

Factory history

The story of the factory began in 1898, when the Baltic Cotton Spinning and Weaving Factory was founded. Among the city folk, it became known simply as the Sitsi factory. The factory started with a hundred pairs of hands, but it reached its golden age by the 1908, when more than 2,000 diligent employees worked here. In addition to spinning yarn, factory workers lived a cheerful and creative social life. Work and fun went hand in hand.

At that time, the factory was not only a place of production, but the centre of an entire community, including both production buildings and workers’ living quarters, from the general manager’s villa to the houses of simple workers.

Through the twists and turns of history, from the Tsarist time’s glory to the final decades of the 20th century, the factory saw several expansions and reorganizations, remaining a symbol of Tallinn’s industrial landscape until its closure in 2005.

Now is the time to give a new lease of life to the legendary Factory!
